Cuba is a unique place where Whites & Blacks live happily together.
Where to stay in Havana ? First time visitors should stay in a hotel. I recommend Hotel Nacional which is a great place to stay. Old and full of history. Other staying option is private houses. They are called Casa Particular. You need to be careful while renting the house. Hot water or other esssential things may not be included in the price. Casa Particular will be comfortable if you are hanging out at night in Cuba. You got what I mean
Which location is ideal to stay ? Well. If you like hanging out at nights, it might be better staying close to Vedado district where the nightclubs are. Havana Vieja district (Old Havana) is also nice place to settle down if you are planning to hang out during daytime. Old Havana also have nice bars and restaurants. Taxi is not a big deal in Havana so no need to think too much for choosing the district.
If you don’t have a photo with these Cuban chicks, this means you haven’t been to Havana. They are hanging out in Old Havana to get your CUCs
Don’t bring US dollars to Cuba. Bring “EURO” instead. Otherwise you will have rate and commission problems. ATMs work in Cuba for most Visa cards, but not for Mastercards. We strongly recommend you to bring enough cash for Cuba. You will experience lots of problem while withdrawing your money. If you are out of cash, don’t worry still you have chance. Go to a hotel (like Hotel Nacional) and they have a special exchange office inside the hotel. They will give you cash and charge it to your card. You can use your debit or credit card. Of course with a good rate of commision. Don’t forget that you can only do these during day time.
Flying to Cuba is NOT cheap. US ambargo makes it impossible to fly over US. Flying options are via Toronto, Cancun, Madrid, Paris or Moscow. We recommend flying via Cancun. Combining Cancun with Cuba is a great idea. Especially spring break time.
When arriving to Havana, make sure you have the insurance and return ticket. They requested to see my insurance in my last trip to Havana during passport control.
You can not find regular medicines in Cuba because Cuba produces its own medicines. Don’t forget to bring your own medicines.
We were really disappointed with Cuba’s food culture. Don’t expect high quality foods, go for fish. But when it comes to Mojito and other drinks, you will enjoy a lot. Mojitos are around 2-3 euros. In some places may be less than that. Cuban people drink all these as refresher. El Floridita is an historic fish restaurant and cocktail bar in the older part of Havana. Known as Ernest Hemingway’s favorite bar. Try Mojito and daiquiri.
1st of May is an important date for Cuba. You should definitely plan your visit for this amazing gathering. Don’t forget to wake up early in the morning for this activity.
Cuban art is famous. You will see lots of paintings in Havana. We recommend you to bring empty luggage just for this. Don’t forget that you may buy these paintings in a limited amount. Also don’t miss to take photos of the graffitis on the streets. They are amazing.
Getting to the hotel with old American cars is really enjoying. You may also rent these cars and enjoy Havana.
Havana is really safe. Visit Havana Vieja (Old Havana). Explore all Havana streets. In every corner you will find something interesting. You can take stunning photos there. People may want to communicate with you. Don’t worry Cuban people are so friendly.
